Chapter Thirteen, Cait

The funeral for the dead Sidhe and two Reapers made my heart hurt. One look at Dena’s face, all planes and angles and pain, told me without words how much she’d suffered. The Vampires had turned all their targets. It was their only option since Sidhe are immortal. Perhaps the Vamps hadn’t been certain about Reaper status in that regard.

And they weren’t taking any chances.

I stood over the biers, saying goodbye and doing my best not to lose it. Dena hadn’t gotten to these three in time to reverse the blood-borne curse. They’d died by her hand because she had no choice.

The Sidhe’s name was Jonathan. The Reapers were Merry and Christine. They’d been assigned to a big chunk of South America. I hadn’t known them well, but any loss was unacceptable. The bodies on their raised biers were committed to magefire after everyone told tales of their bravery and wished them the pagan equivalent of Godspeed.

Stacia and I formed a gateway and welcomed their spirits to the afterlife. I’d managed not to cry before the shades latched onto my magic, but by the time they were done, my cheeks were damp with tears.

Such a shame.

Such a waste.

Anger rushed through me in a scorching tide that dried my tears and left me feeling like an empty husk. Worse, I kept looking over one shoulder or the other for Death. Surely, she’d felt her Reapers die. Eh, maybe not hers any longer. We’d severed the connection, so it was possible she had no idea. Regardless, I was grateful she didn’t splat through a portal to chide us for how badly we’d failed.

I had enough on my plate, so much my perennial concerns about Carrick Sky Sports had vanished from center stage.

Once the gateway was down, Stacia gripped my upper arm. “I promised Cathbad I’d tutor you.”

I shut my eyes for a moment. They felt hot and gritty. I hadn’t forgotten, not exactly, but it meant I couldn’t go after Kiko quite yet. “How long will it take?”

“Hard to say. I figured you’d need to get some rest first, and then—”

“No.” The word came out harsher than I’d meant, and I winced. “Sorry. A friend of mine is in trouble because of me. Liam and I were headed for Seattle to see if we can’t find her.”

Stacia nodded, her eyes pinched at their corners. “You can’t go anywhere else until I impart Cathbad’s instruction.”

I drew back, nonplussed. “What do you mean, can’t go anywhere?”

Stacia rolled her sleeve back, revealing a short gash on the inside of her wrist. “He made me swear a blood oath. He probably knew better than any of us how quickly things would heat up. He only left a couple of hours ago. The rest of us were growing concerned about you. No one expected you’d be gone all night dealing with the seethe.”

“We didn’t exactly anticipate it, either,” I muttered.

Liam walked to my side. “Ready to leave?”

“I will be, but first Stacia has to teach me a little bit about the musical magic.
